There are some things in our lives that we can't confront in any sort of direct way. For these, it's useful to use a metaphor - some sort of symbolic relationship between the indirect and the real. It's not just for stories, either. Computer scientists use symbols - ones and zeros - which become code, objects which have methods that represent things and actions in the real world.
